Over the weekend I had the pleasure of attending a conference I have been following for a while, Create & Cultivate. I’ve been inspired by this incredible gathering of empowered women for years, and was over-the-moon excited when I found out they were coming to Seattle. I still feel like I’m bursting with motivation and inspiration days after the event concluded. But that’s the point, right? To take that feeling you have when you go there, and then go kick ass in your own life, in whatever way that might be. I’ve been posting on overload over on Instagram (you can find me there @thelyonbadger!) I’m sharing some of my key takeaways with you lovely ladies (shout out to any fellas readin’ here too–I see you!). I’d also highly recommend attending the conference if it comes to a city near you, though it’s absolutely worth the trip to somewhere. If you’re on the fence…DO IT. One of the questions I’ve gotten the most? What the heck is this amazing conference?? So let’s get right too it, shall we?
What is Create & Cultivate?
In a nutshell? Create & Cultivate is a movement for women looking to Create & Cultivate the career of their dreams. From the creators themselves…”We gather the next generation of curious creatives, entrepreneurs and bosses to spark conversation around the topics they are passionate about from influencer marketing and brand building to raising money. At Create & Cultivate you are destined to meet other talented, like-minded women, all while learning tips and tricks from some of the best in the business. Attendees get access to a highly curated, impactful one-day program of workshops, mentor sessions, and panels, as well as delicious cocktails, food, pop-up shops, photo booths, gift bags, and more.” Sign. Me. Up. Now that you know a bit more about what the vibe of the conference is, I’ll fill you in on a few key takeaways from the weekend.
Break Out of Your Comfort Zone
“THERE’S NOT PERFECT SHAPED HOLE IN THE WORLD THAT YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO RUN THROUGH” – ZELDA WILLIAMS, Actress
First things first–get your business cards ready. I know this can feel uncomfortable, but the whole point of this massive gathering of badass women is to meet one another. Learn about each other, and get to know complete strangers. On Friday evening, Create & Cultivate hosted a happy hour at an adorable spot in Seattle (if you’re looking for a co-working space in Seattle, I highly recommend checking out The Riveter) and I was determined to break out of my comfort zone. I walked in not knowing a single person, into a room full of not only beautiful, but incredibly driven women. This can be a bit intimidating. But just walk in head on. I introduced myself to people, and ended up connecting with tons of great ladies. It was a perfect icebreaker for the weekend and gave me the confidence to walk into the big day (Saturday) with the ability to open up, interact, engage, and realize that I deserved to be there. It was an incredible feeling to have that sense of independence.
My suggestion? Be open to new conversations, and new relationships. Don’t stick to your “clique”, because you might just meet someone who will have a huge impact on your future. I stayed during the happy hour at the end as things were winding down, and made a point to introduce myself to some of the vendors, and those were some of the most fulfilling conversations I had the entire weekend! Don’t be nervous. You got this.

You Deserve to Be in the Room
“IT’S INCREDIBLE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE MEN IN THE ROOM UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF THE WOMEN” — RIAN BUCKLEY, My Fit Code
YES. So much yes. In a world still dominated by male ceo’s and executives, it can become easy to fall into a rut that you don’t belong in the “old boys club.” Ladies, it’s 2017! This is simply not the case anymore, and no one should make you think that you don’t deserve to be there. One of the panels I was able to sit in on was SO damn inspiring. The overall theme was that yes-you deserve a seat at the table. Don’t be afraid to speak up and give your opinion. The best ideas can come from the intern, the new hire, the one who’s constantly overlooked. Make your voice heard, because you know you have so much to bring to the table. Make sure everyone else in the room knows it too.
Community over Competition is a Real Thing
“I SUBSCRIBE TO THE SHINE THEORY. IF YOU SHINE, I SHINE” – Nicolette Mason
I just wrote a whole post about this, here, so the timing of this could not be more spot on. It’s SO damn refreshing that the catty stereotype of women is finally being broken. That people realize that when you shine, I shine too. That there is room for everyone, and that when women support one another, there is nothing that can stand in our ways. I’d encourage all the ladies out there to take this thought and exhibit it in their everyday lives. We can get so much further when we support, encourage, and lift each other up. There’s so much potential in today’s digital age, and we’re lucky as heck to be living in the time that we live in. So let’s embrace that. To all the women out there who are chasing their dreams, whether it’s becoming the CEO of their male dominated company, or chasing that side hustle: know that you have a community of women who support you.
It Can Feel Overwhelming
“WHEN SOMEONE TELLS YOU YOU CAN’T DO SOMETHING, TELL THEM THANK YOU” – KENDRA SCOTT, Kendra Scott Jewelry
The downfall to being in a room full of badass women who are out there just absolutely killing it? It can definitely feel overwhelming. I had moments of, “Holy shit these women are absolutely kicking ass out there what am I doing with my life?” It was then that I decided to take my own advice, and remember that rather than compare myself to these women, to be motivated by their successes. And to know that if they can do this, I can too! The biggest takeaway from this that all of the panelists reiterated is that this community is always open to help, support, and encourage. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! People definitely are always open to helping those who want to help themselves. Remember that your path is different than any other person on this earth. Don’t compare your journey to theirs, remember that your journey is your own.
Women are Total Badasses
“EMPOWER US WOMEN AND WE WILL CHANGE THIS WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD” ALICIA KEYS, Singer/Songwriter/Overall Badass
I mean, if it was any question in my mind before this, it was absolutely shattered after this weekend. From watching actresses to business owners to CEO’s to insanely successful bloggers talk about their road to the top-it definitely kicked my butt into gear. This was by far one of the coolest, most inspiring conferences I’ve ever had the pleasure of attending, and I have no doubt in my mind I will attend again in the future. Now brb while I go chase my dreams…
